United Kingdom & Overseas Territories & Crown Dependencies

After the United States of America, I addressed and sent letters to the Overseas Territories of the United Kingdom and Crown Dependencies.

The United Kingdom is an island nation comprised of several once-independent territories in the British Isles. These territories are joined in a union and are ruled over by a sovereign. The nucleus of the present United States of America was a loose confederacy of colonies on the periphery of a quickly growing British empire that fought for and won their independence – this was the first and only armed rebellion of colonists who fought against the British and won; later rebellions were quelled. Just as the British Empire reached its height at the turn of the last century, Europe imploded and war swept the continent, igniting the flames of nationalism and irredentism. The remainder of the century found empires fragmenting and colonies advocating for independence. The last great wave of decolonization in the British Empire occurred in the 1970s – the British Overseas Territories are those territories (for the most part) that did not wish to be decolonized and remain subjects of the British Crown; others are not so easily defined such as South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands – a place with no permanent population – or the British Indian Ocean Territiory which contains a large nature preserve and a military base. The Crown Dependencies, on the other-hand are feudal domains that have ancient relationships with the British Crown.

The Overseas Territories are ruled by the Crown through its representative in the form of Administrators, British Representatives, or Governors-General. The Crown Dependencies have the same, but also their own unique local governments representing or ruling their citizens. The tiny islands of Brecqhou and Herm are the smallest of small feudal lands left – the former with a population of two!

I also sent a letter to the Queen of the United Kingdom: Elizabeth II.
